Hi all

My name is Nathan Hall.  I'm currently a law student at The University of New England in NSW.

Basically i'm in search of information regarding my donor.  My parents sought help from specialists in Wickham Terrace, in Brisbane.  My parents were told that the donor was a Dr working in Wickham Terrace and is a specialist, but that was all.

Due to the fact there was no formalised system, or sperm freezing at that time the sperm was fresh.  The doctors involved were:

Dr John Hennessey, Gino & Obstrician
Dr John Heinz. Gynaecologist, Obstetrician
Dr Thearle. Piadrtics.

I have reason to believe that one of the above doctors was in fact the donor, however I am unsure.

I understand records must have been kept and am in hope that the "Queensland fertility group" will assist me in finding this information.

If anyone knows of, or has information on any of the above mentioed doctors, please let me know.

Nathan

Hi Nathan,

welcome to the forum.
You didn't mention when you were conceived, because the age you are may have a bearing on whether or not records may be available.
How do you know that sperm freezing was not available at the time? The technology was certainly around in the early seventies and was certainly being used here in SA in the early 70's.
You may need to find out what the law is in Qld in regard to finding out information (perhaps a web search may turn up a fertility act or such). As under the law you may or may not be entitled to such things as non-identifying information. I would be pretty certain that under Qld law that you will not be able to access identifying info without consent from the donor.
Is it possible to sepak to the clinic where it was done to find out what records they may or may not have? Perhaps you could also write to the aformentioned doctors and ask if they know of anything about fertility treatment occuring on Wickham Tce. You don't necessarily have to ask "Are you my father"? but you could put a feeler out there to see if anyone will volunteer any info.

Good luck with your search. If there is any way that any of us can help I'm sure we'll do our best.

Regards
Damian

Hello and welcome Nathan.

Damian has given good advice there. I do not know if the doctor for my parents is my donor or not but I wrote to him and he phoned me up to speak to me. You could get a similar result from those three doctors you mention. Fingers crossed.

Cheers,
Adam

Hi Nathan,

I don't know if you have contacted the specialists in Wickham Terrace in Brisbane recently or not.  My children were conceived through Queensland Fertility Group on Wickham Terrace and they are now telling me that when my children are old enough they will provide them with donor information.  Currently there is no legislation in Queensland and I live in hope that they will do as they say.  Good luck, try to talk to the clinic where you were conceived and see if they will help as some will now.

Hi Nathan,

I can tell you that Dr John Hennessy is now retired - has been for a few years now.  Dr John Hynes is still practising.

The co-ordinator of the sperm donation program at present is a scientist by the name of Andrea - I'm sorry I do not know her last name.  But you can either ring her on 3833 1005 or email her on andrea@qfg.com.au.  She is only there on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Good luck

Dear Nathan,

Good luck with QFG, from my experience Andrea is soooo not prepared to help and will certainly not consider making any contact with the donor on your behalf to get them to re-consider their annonomity or ask for current medical information.  I have no medical information on my donor apart from blood type and she has nothing on file that she could give me, pretty hopeless really.  I suggest we break in as we are obviously not going to be given any information any other way, rather frustrating really.  I only wish they end up having problems with their fertility and then they might, just might understand how we feel and what we go through.  They need to remember the kids are the innocent parties here and their rights should be considered.

I really had to laugh at the mention of "breaking in" to get info on the donors!!!
You have no idea how many times this idea went through my mind when I was trying to find my sons donor!!!! Wonder what they would do???  Cheesy

Andrea was well known for being a complete and utter B(*&^ - amongst patients and fellow QFG staff members.  I'm glad she is no longer there.

Thanks TriciaB, this helps to confirm what I thought about Andrea.  I remember contacting the QFG in 2003/4 offering to leave donor details about myself. The response seemed to be very unenthusiatic and unwelcoming. I sent them my details but actually felt that they not interested at all.

Hi Harry and welcome.

Yes Andrea was a law unto her own.
But please don't give up - the new girl is a lot nicer.  I believe her name is Leah.  I got a lot more information from her about our donor that
Andrea was ever willing to give us.  In fact Andrea led us to believe in Jan/Feb 04 when we chose this donor that there has been a pregnancy with him but it did not eventuate.  I infact found out from Leah that Jacob was like the 5th child born to #213 at the time of his birth in December 04.  So if Andrea lied about this then it makes me wonder what other untruths she told other parents/donors.

So please don't give up - you can always try QFG again to make sure they have your details and they fully understand your wishes regarding contact.  I found Leah a lot more understanding and easier to talk to than that woman Andrea.

Take Care.

Hi Nathan,
I'm Kerri, born July 1982. My mum used Dr DeAmbrosis and Dr Hennessy to concieve. I've never heard about the Dr being the donor, only that they used medical students or research assistants (especially in those days when it was new technology). My stats are: blue eyes, brown hair, blood type B+ (father would have been either B or AB blood type). Let me know how your search is going and whether you have any more questions kfraser82(at)hotmail.com
